How a hand of Texas Hold'em works

  1. 1
    Step 01

    Blinds

The two players left of the dealer button post forced bets (small and big blind), so there is always something to play for.

  2. 2
    Step 02

    Preflop

Everyone gets two private cards. You can fold, call or raise.

  3. 3
    Step 03

    Flop, turn and river

Three shared cards are dealt (flop), then one (turn) and one more (river). A betting round follows each step.

  4. 4
    Step 04

    Showdown

Remaining players show their cards. The best five-card hand from your two cards and the five shared cards wins.

Tournament basics

Stack and blind levels

Everyone starts with the same chips. Blinds rise each level so the tournament comes to an end.

Rebuy and add-on

Some tournaments allow buying more chips while registration is open. This is always stated in the event info.

Final table and ICM

With few players left, your finishing place matters more than chips. ICM estimates what your stack is worth, so play gets tighter.

Table etiquette

  • ♦Act in turn and announce your action out loud.
  • ♦Keep your cards on the table and show when all-in after the final action.
  • ♦No advice during a hand, even after you folded.
  • ♦Respect the dealer and the floor: they have the final say.
  • ♦Phone away during a hand.

Your first casino visit

♣ Bring valid ID

Casinos admit 18+ only (sometimes 21+ abroad) and register you at the entrance.

♣ Check the dress code

Many casinos expect smart clothing; sportswear is sometimes refused.

♣ Put your name on the list

In the poker room you sign up with the floor or desk for a cash table or tournament.

♣ Set your budget in advance

Only bring what you can afford to lose and stop when it is gone. Playing should stay fun.

♣ Tips and rake

At cash tables the house takes rake. A small tip for the dealer after winning a pot is customary.
